What’s going on at Sidley? Supposedly a mass exodus. Even my recruiter told me not to go. Is it that much of a nightmare?

Sidley associate here…mass exodus sounds about right. Morale is low. Hours are high and people keep jumping ship. Firm heads won’t actually listen to associates, we’re asking for wfh flexibility and they like yeah come into the office full time.

I have seen the phrase “morale is low” probably 5,000 times since I started in biglaw. That said, I can’t imagine sidley’s Dallas office would be a fun place to be.

Former Sidley - it’s a horrible place to work. It’s that simple.

Author associate: Don’t judge me. I’m fairly sure you don’t know me. My firm is nowhere near KE and we need to value our associates and show them. Otherwise we’ll lose them. I feel grateful to have my job, my career and my firm, and I also feel grateful to work with many (but not all) of the associates on my team. There is nothing better in this business than helping and watching them achieve their potential. If you spent less time maximizing near-team money and more time focusing on longer-term and broader results, you might learn these things. Good luck!

Corporate group is insane, the hours are off the charts. I hear it’s like that at all V20 firms though but idk. Yah turnover has been high though.

I don’t know if anyone expects it to be different but you may as well get recruitment bonuses and whatever else is being offered.

Is it? News to me…

Seems fine in London other than usual biglaw pressures post commencement of the pandemic.

Can’t speak for the US though…

Is there a way of bypassing the H1B lottery? I was told by an external recruiter that if I joined their London team, after a year I could go through H1B process without the lottery. My preference is to remain with Deloitte and transfer - can Deloitte put me through without the lottery? Are there stipulations such as minimum tenure or degree types etc?

Lateraling back to Biglaw as of counsel in super-busy life science niche with 1800 billables requirement. 20+ years in practice (went to ls right out of kindergarten of course;). Position is def non-cookie cutter/lockstep so would really appreciate impressions on salary (500?) and signing bonus (?? no recruiter or referral so I’m thinking that $ at minimum on the table?). Been going round in head so long I need fresh eyes!

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!

My dad died from Covid, and I honestly feel like it’s so insensitive for him to make these comments when he knows that I lost my dad to it. Our office isn’t that big, and I don’t think many people forget being told that someone they know lost someone from Covid. It has made me consider leaving because of it, but the economy isn’t great.
