We ended up pulling this student to have computer lab instead of gym, but really want him to have the active gym time because it would be more beneficial for his activities. Any thoughts on how we can support him to have a good gym time?
I teach in an EBD unit and I experience this all the time! I think the first thing to do is figure out WHY he’s acting defiant. What is the function of the behavior? My student who acts this way only acts up when he wants the extra attention. I would do an FBA to figure out the reason. I would then talk to the student and set very clear expectations for gym class. If it’s something he enjoys and wishes to participate in, he needs to meet the expectations. If he doesn’t meet the expectations, he can’t participate in gym. I’d make it simple enough for the kid to be able to self assess. For my student, in order to go to earn gym he needs to not flip any furniture, complete school work, and have a safe body in gym. If he breaks any of those, he doesn’t earn gym. It starts over every day. Unless the infraction happened in gym and then he misses the next time. The rules could fit your school wide expectations or gym specific. I would make sure that the admin or parents are on board, especially if it’s the only time the student shows this type of defiance. Hopefully that helps!
What is the reasoning behind his defiance? Is there a relationship outside of the actual class with the teacher? With out knowing him, it sounds like a power struggle. Some days he feels in control and has good days, and others he feels like he needs to get in control of something. Is it only in PE?
Can you do a reward system with him? Like if he is good in gym he’ll have time to play on computer/iPad?
