With a renewed focus on diversity in the U.S., agencies should scrutinize their Hispanic and Latin American stats.

The top five Hispanic and Latin American groups in the U.S. are Mexican, who are 62%, Cubans are 4%, Puerto Ricans are 4% on the mainland (+6% in P.R.), Salvadorians are 4%, and Dominicans are 3%.

Spaniards make up only 0.8% of U.S. Hispanics, Brazilians are 0.4% of U.S. Latin Americans.

So flaunting stats of creatives on work visas from Madrid and São Paulo is cheating.

The time for this shit is waaaaaay overdue. I was born in Mexico, but have lived here since I was a kid. I’ve been a US citizen for decades. I’ve worked for General Market agencies and also multicultural agencies. Both agencies pass up on perfectly qualified Americans of Hispanic origin for several reasons (none of them good). For General Market agencies, for the most part is just because they hire white people 99% of the time because others don’t “fit the culture”. In the odd occasion they hire a Latinx, it’s either because it is someone who has won every fucking award there is multiple times and there’s just no way of justifying not hiring them. The other times it’s usually a Brazilian (Brazil usually wins a lot in Cannes) or someone from another Latin American country who has a good number of awards and they get hired with lower than average salaries and lower positions than they held back in their countries. The visas they’re working under, prevent them from going to another shop and the moment they stop performing or there’s a lay-off , they just don’t get their visas renewed and get sent back. It’s pretty exploitative for them, while keeping Americans from getting those jobs.
Hispanic Market agencies used to do something similar A LOT. Many of these agencies have gone under or are barely keeping afloat, but they would bring creatives from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and to a lesser extent Peru, Colombia and other countries where they would pick out the best creatives from said countries and bring them under the same circumstances I already outlined above: Low pay, the promise of a green card some day and the inability to move to a different shop to get a better salary. At most of these Hispanic agencies, a good 80% of their creatives are here on visas.

I remember once when pretty far into the interview process, I lost an ACD job vacancy to a candidate who had been a Chief Creative Officer with 5 lions in Latin America and was now coming here as an ACD with a poorly paid ACD salary. How the fuck was I supposed to compete with that?

There are a lot of people of color that you can hire from São Paulo, from my knowledge. Brazilians are the most diverse people in the world. Almost everyone has African blood.

like

Oh believe me. We are qualified. We exist. Whether US “general market” agencies are willing to a knowledge us, hire us and promote us accordingly is a different question. Signed: a Latin American, female Creative Director.

So you’re saying: hire Americans not foreigners... Rings a bell...

Love that you threw a very loaded grenade then ran, Creative Director 2. But yes, for the sake of everyone, please go.

like

Yes because “us agencies” factors in the middle of the country which isn’t using talent that way. The coastal holding company agencies have industrialized their networks in service of feeding the awards engine. At least 1/3 of my last wpp shop was Brazilian, on transfer and O1 visas, not client facing or billing to specific business, just there to look for awards opportunities. That’s how you can be an ecd with no day to day clients....

Why is Spain included on this list at all?

Creative Director OP nailed it ☝🏽 Then add insult to injury when you have to report to people less qualified/less experienced than you, who take offense at you having opinions on how to improve the work. Bam! Now you’re “spicy” and “difficult to work with.”

My company is in need of a update online, could use your opinions! We need to better showcase our culture (caring, supportive, fun, intelligent IT industry leaders) as well as diversity. We are predominantly white still but making strides to improve here. What’s the best way to approach? I don’t want to seem disingenuous or that we are singling out our diverse employees (asking for photos). We have a remote and on-site workforce about 350+ EEs. Non white EEs make up about 35% of the company rn.

Now that I’m here, I’m seeing everything I’ll be doing is with the News team & makes me uncomfortable. No diversity, outdated software & process.
Financially, it’s the best position I been in. But mentally in this environment, it’s depressing & slow. Nothing innovative or engaging. What would you do?

I love my job and the people I work with, but there’s one thing that really bothers me: the lack of diversity. Sometimes when I walk into the office and see everyone else around me as the only POC, it feels kind of weird. I don’t think anyone here has ever said anything racist or sexist to me personally, but I don’t feel comfortable talking about these issues with anyone because they might take it personally and then things could get awkward between us.

You CAN be that leader that people want to work with. 1st, self assessment is required. Be honest: As a leader, have you engaged in/accepted Attribution Bias with a dash of gender &/or race bias? (See the pic) This is something we all need to be aware of as we lead our teams, provide performance feedback, & model the behaviors we'd like to see more of on our teams. Be on the lookout for Attribution Bias in yourself & on your team. It's a hindrance to creating a high-performing, inclusive culture.

Hey! I am currently working as a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion consultant but looking to transition into DEI Program Management (or similar) for an organization. I’ve started getting some follow ups for jobs but unsure of a firm salary range. One organization said they were offering 92k which I thought was pretty low. Another organization was transparent and said they were looking at 135k. What’s the going rate? Sidenote, I have 10 years of HR experience, 3 DEI certifications.

Why does the 3% Conference get so much money from agencies & clients when they have a history of showcasing toxic, abusive to female employees underneath them, women in advertising? Every year, people are shocked at who gets featured there. The idea is not just to celebrate women, it’s to celebrate aspirational women. Maybe they ran out of speakers and are dipping down too much. But agencies and clients should take a hard look at who is speaking before giving money.

Looking for practical advice on improving my attitude to work.

So imagine an imaginary scale where 0 is the worst piece of work a studio could produce and 10 is the best possible outcome.

As an animator working in an agency, I normally end up involved in projects towards the end, so by the time I get my hands on a project I can add between 1 and 3 depending on how much effort I put in.

If a project is a 3 when I get it, how do I summon the energy to make it a 6 that I could to make a 7 a 10?

During the VMAs last night there was a car commercial and all I have to say is that if your brand is picking a 5 year old Sia song that didn’t even chart too well as a song for a NEW commercial, you need to tap into culture a little bit.

I’m begging for a world where we stop using songs like this and Roar by Katy Perry as the standard backing tracks for boring ads.
