I was contacted by an Amazon recruiter for a remote Sr. Program Manager role. I took and passed the assessment and was moved to the hiring manager round which was scheduled for tomorrow. I got an email tonight saying that the Director of the group decided that the person must be in Seattle. I am in Austin, which is not an option. I’m disappointed! The recruiter will let me know if any remote roles come up but in the mean time, does anyone have any remote Amazon roles that they’d refer me to?

I love asking:
1. If you could only chose two, tell me what and why: cost, quality, speed
2. Tell me how you include DEI in your reports and goals, can you give me a recent example?
3. Can you tell me about a time you disagreed with a direct report/team member. What was it about and how did it work out?
4. What does your onboarding and upboarding plans look like? What are you measuring and what is defined as a successful transition into or up within the company?

You can ask why the position is open. A green flag for me is that the person who previously had the role was promoted within the company. You might also ask about specific programs or ways they build company culture or encourage the company values. If they cannot give you any concrete examples of culture initiatives I would take that as a major 🚩
check out Glassdoor reviews. Get on LinkedIn and figure out the company's turnover rate. Then contact a few ex longer-term employees and ask them if they'd be willing to have a call. Ask open-ended... How they would describe the culture.
Try asking about employee engagement instead of the organization's culture, which is a buzzword nowadays. Then measure the culture based on the replies you receive to your questions. After all, culture dictates how work is carried out. You could find some ideas for questions by searching for "staff engagement questions."
Ask them about the last time they incorporated employee feedback. Ask them to build upon what the feedback was, the timeline to make the requested change, and the final result.
